Ingrid Ciprián-Matthews

Ingrid Ciprián-Matthews is the senior editorial advisor for politics and election coverage for CBS News, where she provides guidance and editorial direction for all political and election coverage.
Ciprián-Matthews transitioned into the new role in August 2024.
Previously, Ciprián-Matthews was president of CBS News where she had top editorial oversight for CBS News across all platforms, including all broadcast and streaming programs, all digital and radio editorial content, as well as global newsgathering, standards and practices, race and culture and more.
An award-winning journalist and newsroom leader, Ciprián-Matthews became the first Latina to be president of CBS News and only the second woman in the company’s history to head up the Network news operation in August 2023.
During her three decades at CBS News, Ciprián-Matthews has helped shape the coverage seen and heard by millions of viewers daily. Guided by her editorial expertise, depth of knowledge and impeccable news judgment, she has guided CBS News’ reporting of many of the major news events of the modern era: the war in Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas war, the COVID-19 pandemic, the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, multiple presidential elections, including the 2020 campaign,  countless mass shootings, ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, the bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania; numerous bombings in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan; liberation movements and the Arab Spring from Tunisia to Egypt; the nuclear challenge from both Iran and North Korea; and deadly earthquakes in China, Haiti and Chile. 
Throughout her distinguished career, Ciprián-Matthews has held senior management roles and managed teams across the globe.
She joined CBS News in 1993 as a senior producer for live segments for the morning news. Her previous roles include foreign editor, senior broadcast producer for “CBS Evening News,” senior producer for CBS News’ foreign coverage, deputy bureau chief for the CBS News London bureau, and senior broadcast producer for CBS News’ morning broadcasts.
She has served as an executive vice president for CBS News since 2018, first as the head of strategic professional development, where she focused on recruitment and development of off-air talent to attract and retain the best workforce for CBS News. As part of CBS News’ senior executive leadership team, Ciprián-Matthews also worked tirelessly to shepherd new initiatives focused on enhancing CBS News’ culture.
Before joining CBS News, Ciprián-Matthews worked at CNN, first as a field producer, assignment manager and assignment editor then as managing editor of the New York bureau from 1990-1993. She started her career as a general assignment reporter for the National Public Radio Spanish-language news program “Enfoque Nacional.”
Ciprián-Matthews is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and the recipient of an Alfred I. duPont Award for CBS News’ coverage of a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. In 2024, the RTDNA presented her with a First Amendment Award. She was also named to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame. In 2016, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists presented Ciprián-Matthews with the Presidential Award of Impact, citing her exceptional news experience and deep commitment to journalistic excellence.
She has served in several high-profile leadership positions, including on the advisory board for the International Women’s Media Foundation, News Leaders Association (formerly the American Society of News Editors and AP Media Editors), the Freedom Forum Institute’s Power Shift Project and the Paramount Veterans Network Advisory Council.
Ciprián-Matthews was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In 1981, she received a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College and graduated from New York University in 1984 with a master’s degree in journalism.
